Shipping Excepted Lithium Batteries

Course Code: HMT 252

$129

This course provides streamlined training on the requirements to ship excepted lithium batteries by ground, air, and vessel. These smaller lithium batteries (like button cells, cell phone batteries, and others) may qualify for relief from some regulatory requirements.

If you ship excepted lithium cells or batteries alone by air (i.e., not "in" or "with" equipment), you will need the Shipping Lithium Batteries course instead (Details).

Updated IATA DGR Standards for Lithium Battery Air Shippers

The 2022 IATA DGR eliminated the Section II Packing Instructions for small lithium cells or batteries shipped separately (UN 3480 and UN 3090).

When shipped standalone by air, smaller lithium cells and batteries may no longer be offered as "excepted." Instead, shippers must follow Section IA or IB of the applicable IATA Packing Instruction (i.e., PI 965 or 968).

Employees who package, mark and label, or document these shipments may need update training to continue offering compliant packages.
