2020 IATA Lithium Battery Guidance Now Available

Posted on 1/28/2020 by Roger Marks

Recently, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) released its 2020 Lithium Battery Guidance Document for shippers who offer lithium-ion or lithium-metal batteries for air transport.

See the 2020 Lithium Battery Guidance Document here.

The guidance document lays out key definitions, restrictions, and other information needed to properly prepare and offer lithium battery air shipments.  It also includes a useful flowchart for classifying lithium batteries for transport.

Lithium Battery Test Summary Document

The 2020 guidance document also describes the lithium battery Test Summary document, which manufacturers and distributors are required to make available as of January 1, 2020.

Manufacturers and distributors may make the test summary available by posting it on a company website or by preparing a paper document. The guidance document explicitly states that “(t)here is no expectation for the shipper/distributor to provide paper copies with each consignment containing lithium batteries.”
