Now On Demand: Webinars on Newly Proposed RCRA Rules
Update 11/05/15: In today's Federal Register, US EPA extended the comment period for both proposed rules described below; the Hazardous Waste Generator Improvements Rule and the Management Standards for Hazardous Waste Pharmaceuticals Rule. The deadline for comments on both these new RCRA rules is now December 24, 2015.
New RCRA Rule Webinars Now Free and On Demand!
In October, US EPA finalized two hazardous waste rules that will affect how facilities nationwide manage waste under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). To help site managers and personnel prepare for the changing EPA standards, Lion presented two free, private webinars for Lion Members on October 19 and 20.
Due to the popularity of these exclusive webinar sessions—more than 400 Lion Technology Members signed up to attend—Lion Technology today made the sessions available for both Members and non-Members to watch on demand at Lion.com.
New Rule 1: The Generator Improvements Rule
The Generator Improvements Rule is comprised of a major restructuring of the RCRA rules. Ultimately, the goal of this new rule is to bring all the hazardous waste regulations and requirements together in one place, instead of having them spread across different sections of Title 40 of the Code of Federal Regulations, known to environmental professionals as “40 CFR.”
In addition to significant re-alignment of the RCRA regulations, the proposed rule will add some new requirements for marking hazardous waste containers and US EPA’s first official standards for episodic generation.
New Rule 2: Management Standards for Hazardous Waste Pharmaceuticals
The second major Final Rule proposed by US EPA last month is the Management Standards for Hazardous Waste Pharmaceuticals Rule. This new rule aims to help hospitals, retail pharmacies, vet clinics, doctors’ offices, dentists’ offices, chiropractors, outpatient care centers, and other healthcare facilities to safely manage excess pharmaceuticals, which are often regulated as hazardous waste under EPA rules.
The newly proposed RCRA rule creates alternative, less stringent hazardous waste management standards for healthcare facilities to follow for some pharmaceutical hazardous wastes. The rule also officially prohibits drain disposal of pharmaceuticals.
Keeping up with changing hazardous waste rules is critical; US EPA fines for mismanaging waste are as high as $37,500 per day, per violation. The two free on-demand RCRA webinars at Lion.com will help managers and personnel maintain compliance and safely manage hazardous waste on site.
