Major Grocery Chain to Pay $3.5M for RCRA Violations
A major US grocery chain faces a $3,500,000 civil penalty from US EPA for alleged violations of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) hazardous waste regulations.
According to an EPA press release, the grocer failed to properly identify and handle hazardous waste at facilities in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. More specifically, EPA alleges that the company mishandled spent lamps, which are regulated as universal waste under RCRA.
In addition to the seven-figure civil penalty, the company will fund a supplemental environmental project (SEP) to educate other retailers about hazardous waste compliance, at a cost of $500,000.
