The Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments of 1986 (SDWA) required the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to establish criteria through which an aquifer may be declared a critical aquifer protection area. These aquifers are colloquially referred to as “sole source aquifers.” These are, essentially, aquifers that are the only drinking water supply for the population of a region.12/20/2016
