Hazmat Shipping & Transportation
The US Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR) mandate training for all “hazmat employees”—defined as persons whose actions can directly affect hazmat transportation safety.
Hazmat employee training must be:
- Provided within 90 days of hire date/assignment.
- Repeated every three years at a minimum.
- Documented and certified by the employer.

Hazardous Waste Management
The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) regulations require training for “hazardous waste personnel,” defined as any employee at a hazardous waste facility whose actions or failure to act could result in noncompliance.
For large quantity generators (LQGs) of hazardous waste, training must be:
- Provided within 6 months hire date/assignment.
- Repeated annually at a minimum.
- Documented and certified by the employer.

For small quantity generators (SQGs), training must ensure that personnel are “thoroughly familiar” with the RCRA requirements [40 CFR 262.16].
