- Select, use, and care for personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators
- Perform offensive response actions to stop a hazardous substance release
- Demonstrate understanding of decontamination and decontamination practices
- Understand the scope and applicability of OSHA’s HAZWOPER Standard
- Implement the Incident Command System (ICS) as part of emergency response
- Recognize hazard labels (DOT, GHS, NFPA, HMIS)
- Use the Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) to guide on-scene actions
- List the steps of a typical emergency response scenario
- Identify health and safety risks
- Describe basic actions for all first responders
- Demonstrate how to select and use PPE, incl. respirators
- Apply OSHA requirements for PPE inspection, storage, and maintenance
- Explain the rules for site monitoring, control, and security
- Identify the types of monitors and detectors that hazmat technicians may use
- Describe advanced hazmat mitigation techniques
- Articulate the importance of an effective Emergency Response Plan
- Describe how to implement appropriate hazmat decontamination
- Detail the components of a medical surveillance program
