US DOT requires training for all hazmat employees, including drivers, within 90 days of hire date or job assignment. Recurrent hazmat training is required at least every three years (49 CFR 172.704).

Hazmat drivers commonly perform regulated job functions like accepting hazmat shipments and loading or unloading vehicles (in addition to operating the motor vehicle).
