Shipping Lithium Batteries (Function-Specific)

Key Learning Objectives

• Provide initial or recurrent "function-specific" hazmat training for employees involved in shipping lithium batteries, as required by 49 CFR 172.704(a)(2) 
• Describe the hazards of lithium-ion and lithium-metal batteries
• Properly package, mark, label, and document lithium batteries for ground, air, or vessel transportation

• Revised requirements for excepted batteries (i.e., "Section II)
• Classifying, naming, and packaging lithium batteries
• Marking, labeling, and placarding shipments
• Primary vs. secondary batteries

• Completing shipping papers and the Shipper’s Declaration

This online course provides function-specific training required by 49 CFR 172.704(a)(2).

US DOT also requires that general awareness and cargo security awareness training be part of hazmat employees' initial and recurrent training. Hazmat safety training and security plan training are required too, when applicable (see 49 CFR 172.704(a)(1)–(5)).
